No doubt you’ve heard about them, or maybe even set them yourselves. Is setting goals even important? Does it really help you achieve more? Just what is a goal anyways? These are just some of the questions that we get asked on a regular basis.
Simply put, goals are a desired result in a person’s life. Maybe you want to make more money, or have a better relationship with your spouse. Whatever the goal is, it is a desired outcome that you want for your life.
When you begin to set goals for your life, you give yourself something to aim at. The more specific you are with our goals (where you want to get), the better the plan you can make to get us from point “A” to point “B”. Therefore, setting goals is the foundation of your success.
There are four main reasons why people don’t set goals. First, they think that setting goals isn’t important. They think that simply working at something will eventually get them to where they want to go. The only problem with this is that if you don’t know where you’re going, then you’re bound to end up where you’re headed . . . which is nowhere!
The second reason that people don’t set goals is that they don’t know how. They may know what they want, but they have no idea how to formulate a plan on how to set and achieve their goals. The way we always look at goals is to take the big goal that you have, and break it down into the smallest pieces possible. Ultimately, you want to know what you should be doing on an everyday basis to give you the best possible chance to succeed at that goal.
The third reason (and most common) is that people fear failure (not hitting their goals), so they choose instead to not set goals. This is where it is important to re-define the word “failure”. Say you set a goal to make $10,000 more every month but you end up hitting $8,000 more per month instead. You could look at this as a failure, or you could look at it as you increased by $8,000 a month, which might have never happened had you not set a goal in the first place. Your income increased because you had something you were striving towards.
The final reason people don’t set goals is that they fear rejection from others. They think that if people see them set goals and not achieve them, that people will think less of them or think they are not successful. The moment you stop living your life based on other people’s opinions is the moment that you are truly free to see the vastness of your potential. Too many people’s hopes and dreams have been crushed by what other people think. Your life is yours, and yours alone. Remember that.
Goals are important because they give us a destination, somewhere that we would like to end up. Without goals, we have no way of creating a plan to optimize our success, because we don’t know where we are heading. If setting goals still seems intimidating, set daily goals for yourself instead. For example, I’m going to read for 5 minutes, then commit to doing that every single day. Begin small and work your way up, because doing something small is always better than doing nothing at all.
