How to Manage Your Time for Success

So, we are about to embark on one of my biggest pet peeves. Have you ever had someone tell you that they were SO busy that they didn’t have time to hang out, to finish their work, to do their chores, etc.? I’m sure no doubt we have all heard this at one time or another in our lives, probably very recently. If you’re anything like me, this drives you absolutely insane! We all have the same 1,440 minutes in a day, so why is it that some people are able to accomplish so much throughout their day, while others seem to stumble to the finish line, barely able to complete the bare essential tasks, let alone get ahead? The reason is time management.

I have always been a huge believer that you show me your calendar, and I will tell you how successful you are. Why do you say that you might ask. Well, the reason is simple: people who are successful, whether in be in business, finance, health, or any area of life for that matter, all run their calendar, they don’t let their calendar run them. If you’ve ever read any John Maxwell book he talks about the value of taking 15 minutes the night before to plan your next day, then take 15 minutes in the morning to review your day ahead. 30 minutes is all it takes and you’re already on the path towards daily success. Some of you might be saying, that’s great and all, but I have so many things I have to get done, that I simply don’t have enough time in a day to accomplish everyday. This next piece is where it all comes together.

You have to decide what are the most important things in your life that need to get done. Think of a jar, and the most important things in your life being big rocks. Well you want those to go in first, because if you put sand and water in first (non essentials), then your ability to put the big rocks into your jar is greatly diminished. So the big rocks are the things that are going to get you closer to the long term goals you have for your life (a blog to come about goal setting later). Next, would be the little rocks, which are tasks that are essential to the shorter term goals that you have for your life. After that, you can fill your jar with sand, then water, and you start to realize that there is plenty of time throughout your day to accomplish the most important things to you. Does this mean you might have to give up some tv or social media time? Maybe. It all depends on what your big rocks are, and only you can answer that.

I know what helped me greatly was having a planner/journal that could help me track not only my time management, but also my short and long term goals. While looking I came across an amazing journal called 100 Day Goal Journal. It has it all! Goal tracking, time management, and even a section for gratitude, which in my opinion, is the number one positive emotion to have prevalent in your life. If you are new to goal setting, or just need a daily reminder to always focus on the big rocks, then this is the journal for you.

So often, we let the distractions of life take us away from the things that are truly important to us. We wake up one year, two years later, and realize we are no closer to achieving the goals we have for ourselves. I don’t want that to be you, don’t let it be you.
